NEWS FROM IALL

Come to the FLEAT III conference! (a.k.a. IALL '97)

FLEAT (Foreign Language Education and Technology) is a joint conference of the International Association of Learning Laboratories (IALL) and the Language Learning Association of Japan (LLA).

Mark your calendars for August 12 - 16. The FLEAT III site is the University of Victoria, in Victoria (Vancouver Island), British Columbia, Canada. The theme for this year's conference is Languages, Resources, and Cultures.

If you've never been to the Pacific Northwest, you are in for a major treat, among other things the Butchart Gardens, Craigdarroch Castle, and Pacific Rim National Park. If you are combing conference attendance with a family vacation, then there couldn't be a better site for this conference.

How to drive to NERALLD...
(REGISTRATION INCLUDES A PARKING PERMIT)
Directions to the Boston University Charles River Campus:

From the North
Take I-93 or Route 1 South to Boston. Exit onto Storrow Drive (Exit 26). Continue on Storrow Drive to the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions below.

From the Southeast
Take I-93 Route 3 (Southeast Expressway) North to Boston. Exit onto Storrow Drive (Exit 26). Continue on Storrow Drive to the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions below.

From the South or West
Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) East to Exit 18, Brighton/Cambridge. Exit left. Follow signs to Cambridge to the second set of lights. Turn right at the lights; this is Soldiers Field Road/Storrow Drive. Exit Storrow Drive at the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions below.

By Public Transportation
Boston University is easily accessible by public transportation. The "B" branch of the MBTA Green Line passes through the campus along Commonwealth Avenue. Get off at the above-ground stop called "Boston University East."Follow directions for entering the building in second paragraph, below.

Local Directions
From the Kenmore Square/Commonwealth Avenue exit of Storrow Drive: At the first set of traffic lights, turn right onto Beacon Street. At this point, the road forks; the right fork is Bay State Road. Take Bay State Road and follow it for several blocks until you see a castle-like building on the right (appropriately named The Castle), and a large stone marker on the median, engraved with the university name. Go forward and give your parking pass to the attendant, and turn left into the lot. You are directly behind the building which houses the language lab. Look for a down ramp to nter the building, into the basement. Follow the signs to the elevator. The Geddes Language Center is on the 5th floor.

If the lot behind the building is full, exit the lot the way you entered. Turn right at The Castle (you have little other choice). At the traffic light, turn left onto Comm., then immediately take your first right. Turn right again into the garage under the triple-tower dorm high-rise, and park. Keep left; give your permit to the attendant. Park and exit. Once outside the garage, cross Comm Ave, and enter 685 Comm. via the large exterior stairway with three sets of bronze double doors, into the lobby of the Tsai Performance Center. Take one of the lobby elevators to the Geddes Language Center on the 5th floor.

If you arrive on campus without your permit, stop at any blue police call box on campus, press "on" and dial 3-2640. Explain your plight. We will help in any way we can.
