HEY THIS LOOKS GOOD!
If you were at the October 1998 meeting you know this will be a worthwhile training session. In fact, we expected it to be so popular that we opened early registration to NERALLD members-in-good-standing only, for available seats. At press time, there are 27 seats left.

WHO MAY ATTEND?
NERALLD meetings are for NERALLD members. This meeting topic is fairly technical in nature. If it isn't quite in your area but you know someone who would benefit from the training, we have a deal:

For this meeting, if you're a member you may send someone in your place at no extra charge. If you want to bring someone else along with you, please have them join up. If you aren't a member yourself, please join if you plan to attend. It's a deal, no matter which way you slice it!

Membership is kept at a reasonable rate -- $25/year, or $15 if you join after January 1.

Memberships are individual, not institutional.

THE DATE AND PLACE FOR OUR FALL 99 MEETING HAS BEEN SET

OCTOBER 15, 1999
NERALLD MEETING at DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
Hanover, NH

TOPIC TO BE ANNOUNCED*

* A topic has been suggested for 10/99:
Streaming QuickTime, mpeg video, DVD formats -- what are the implications for language resource centers?

This is a topic that could be easily handled at Dartmouth; it builds upon what we have covered in some of our recent meetings (Creating a New Language Lab and Pros & Cons of Digital vs Analog 4-98 at Harvard, Establishing Digital Standards at Wellesley 10-98). We'll discuss this at the meeting at Middlebury 4-30-99.

See further down for more information about how we select topics for our meetings.

ACCOMMODATIONS are VERY HARD TO SECURE in Hanover in the Fall. The folks at Dartmouth urge you to reserve early! Dartmouth has a very full schedule of Fall events (foliage notwithstanding). Accommodations get booked months in advance. Here's a starter list.

How Does NERALLD Select Topics for Meetings?

We select a specific topic for each meeting, to be researched and presented by a group of NERALLDers. One of the main orders of business at the meetings is to pick a topic and a group of volunteers to cover the subsequent meeting. It is be left up to the planning group how they will deal with their topic. Some formats which have been successfully used:
Sometimes the host institution is suited for a particular topic because of staff expertise, features of the facilities or other resources. This may be the case for our Fall 99 meeting at Dartmouth College.

Presenters

In most cases, no special skill or expertise is required! Research your topic and be willing to get up there in front of everyone and lay out what you have found!Obviously, knowledge in the area of interest in a plus, but many NERALLD members have cut their 'presentation teeth' at our regional meetings. It is a great place to get over your fear of speaking in front of groups. Presenters are encouraged to summarize their presentation(s) for the Newsletter.

Sure I am still interested in our organization and might come and visit at one of the meetings. So, do send me E-mail and I will check the newsletter on the Web. Your guesses were both on the mark. I am now in Argentina where we have had one of the greatest adventure in our lives. Bill and I went to Tierra del fuego and climbed a glacier. It is a fantastic experience, nature is overwhelming here. We went from the jungles of the north to the southern deserts and the glacier parks. fantastic. We are now back in Buenos Aires, a very cosmopolitan city and are enjoying a few days of rest before going to Patagonia with our children. I took lots of books along and truly enjoy the freedom and leisure of this new life. There is a time for everything and this is just wonderful.
Warm regards
Michele

Michele's job has been filled by Kara Schwartz, new member since October 1998.
