"Distance Learning and Online Course Management Tools"

plus

PRE-MEETING WORKSHOP/DISCUSSION: "Non-Western Fonts and Unicode: ?"

Thursday, November 1, 2001 1PM-4PM

Both events hosted by:

College of the Holy Cross

Worcester, MA

The
Prez Sez

From the President of NERALLD:

May I begin by expressing my concern and hope that you, your families, and friends are all safe and sound at this time of national/international crisis. Please let me know of anyone in our NERALLD family directly affected by the horrific events of September 11, 2001, so that we may offer our assistance. I call to your attention a response to these events issued by the presidents of IALLT, CALICO and EUROCALL (http://iallt.org). As we begin this new NERALLD year, let us reflect upon the significance of our work as facilitators of intercultural communication and understanding through language learning.

Connie Montross of Clark University, Program Chair, has been busy putting together an excellent program for NERALLD's Fall meeting to be held at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA on Friday, November 2, 2001. Join Connie, our host Mary Morrisard-Larkin of Holy Cross's Self-Paced Language Program, fellow NERALLDers and four guest presenters to take a closer look at "Distance Learning and Online Course Management Tools." See the program agenda on page 3 for a preview of what's in store. Care to get your hands on solutions to challenges posed by non-Western fonts and explore the new possibilities of Unicode? Why not come to Worcester a day earlier and join in the 3-hour workshop/discussion organized by Emmanuel Paris-Bouvret of Trinity College? Different operating systems and applications will be examined for solutions they might offer for non-Western fonts, and special attention will be given to online course management tools. Register now (page 5)! This workshop is limited to just 15 participants.

To take advantage of these and other NERALLD opportunities in 2001-2002, you must be a member in good standing. Now's the time to become a new member or to renew your current or lapsed membership. Complete the form on page 5. Our yearly dues are still only $25.00! In the Business Matters column on page 2, read about a proposed change to our membership dues structure, and be ready to vote on the related bylaw change at the meeting on November 2nd.

The Prez Sez: "Renew yourself with NERALLD - the course management tool for your professional life! In early November go the distance to Holy Cross in Worcester. Just remember to bring extra lunch money!"

Cindy Bravo, Boston College cynthia.bravo@bc.edu or langlab@bc.edu

Business Matters!

The following items are on the NERALLD business meeting agenda on November 2, 2001:

(1) NERALLD MEMBERSHIP DUES - At the 6/18/01 meeting of the Summer Advisory Board, it was recommended that membership dues be set at the one rate of $25.00/year, no matter when a person joins within the membership year(10/1-9/30). This recommendation would thus eliminate the half-year (1/1-6/30) membership fee option currently available. Cast your vote on 11/2/01.

(2) NERALLD OFFICERS - The Advisory Board further recommended that the membership vote on specifying the terms of office and cycles of service for the Newsletter Editor, Webmaster and Recording Secretary. Please consider: (a) two-year terms of office, (b) staggered cycles of service keyed to the start/stop of the NERALLD President's term of office.

(3) K-12 OUTREACH - Are you a K-12 educator? Are you a NERALLDer interested in language learning at the elementary and secondary school levels? Share your ideas about how NERALLD might better address the needs and interests of the K-12 community. Email Cindy Bravo ( langlab@bc.edu ) today!

(4) LUNCH MONEY - The traditional $5.00 lunch fee charged to the individual NERALLD member in attendance at a meeting has been insufficient to meet the steady increase in luncheon costs over the last ten years. Beginning with the Fall '01 meeting, the lunch fee will be increased to $10.00 to help defray these increased costs.

Resources of Interest

(1) WEBSITES OF NEW ENGLAND LABS Have a look at Mark Sanford's compilation of New England's lab websites at http://www.marlboro.edu/~neralld/resourc/labweb.html. While you're there, check out Dick House's "virtual presentation" to see and hear Dick's ideas for this page. If you don't find your lab/resource center listed, or you want to add a photo of your lab or an audioclip to introduce and welcome visitors to your site, Ruth Trometer of MIT (trometer@mit.edu) or Dick House, our Webmaster (houser@wabash.edu), will be happy to accept your contributions. Let's expand this valuable resource!

(2) GIVE ME A "T!" ("T" for Technology, that is!) - After years of concealing its "T", the acronym of the International Association for Language Learning Technology now proudly reflects the organization's true identity: IALLT. Visit: http://iallt.org/ for more news from IALLT, Inc. (Yes, the organization is now incorporated too!)

(3) What is UNICODE? Visit: http://www.unicode.org/unicode/standard/WhatIsUnicode.html

URI currently uses WebCT as a management tool for all Desktop Computing Labs. When the Language Learning Resource Center became part of DeskTop, many of the same DeskTop elements were incorporated into the LLRC WebCT site and site-specific information was added. Through WebCT, student workers access work schedules, contact information, FAQs and critical information about assets. As our use of WebCT has evolved, the forum feature has been pivotal, because it allows student workers to pass important information from shift to shift.
