From the President of NERALLD: Greetings and welcome to a new (academic) year! I know that the last few weeks have been very busy for all of us but hopefully by next month we will all be able to take a short break, enjoy the beautiful fall foliage in western Massachusetts, and come together as a group to learn all about finding new financial resources for our institutions. Our planning committee has put together a program that will address grant funding from both ends of the spectrum and includes a presentation by the executive director of a foundation as well as a panel conducted by a group of NERALLD members who have all won prestigious grants. It should prove to be an informative and collegial event! I look forward to seeing all of you in Northampton!
Mary Morrisard-Larkin, |

Business Matters! |
The Summer Advisory Board Meeting was held in Worcester, MA on August 1, 2003. Among the items that were discussed were membership dues changes, new elected positions and our tax-exempt status. It was agreed at that meeting that a sub-committee would be appointed to further investigate some of these issues and, in particular, their impact on our current by laws. If you are interested in directing the future of our organization, please consider volunteering for this committee at our Fall Meeting. |

Tailoring Your Project to Optimize Success
Robert C. Davis, Director, Educational Technology Services/Smith College
This portion of the panel presentation will consider strategies for meeting your colleges needs while optimizing chances for success with the granting institution. When writing grants, we are all too aware of our institutions needs and can easily document and justify them with precision. In our zeal (and need!) we often fail to consider fully the objectives of the granting agency. This presentation, based on successful (and unsuccessful) grant applications, will suggest ways in which we might find that middle ground between what we need and what agencies wish to fund.
Selling a hybrid space with a hybrid proposal
Claire Keith, Department of French and part-time Lab Director, Marist College.
We will describe how necessity made do for experience when Marist College drafted the proposal for a successful $240 000 FIPSE grant, now in its extended fourth year, that combined technology, international studies, teacher training and community service into a (very) eclectic whole.
